ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Catskill Jazz Factory, founded by Piers Playfair in 2012, is a dynamic, non profit jazz organization. It acts as an incubating and producing house working with world class musicians and developing fully curated programs and related education projects in the village of Tannersville, NY.
 
Artists who have developed projects through Catskill Jazz Factory include Aaron Diehl, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Dan Tepfer, Chris Washburn, Evan Christopher, Marcus Roberts, Charenee Wade, and Joanna Wallfisch. Programs developed through CJF have been performed at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College, Dizzys Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Mondavi Center, Stanford Live, SF Jazz and Detroit Institute of the Arts.

PROGRAMS

Whisper of A Shadow: An Homage to Louis Moreau Gottschalk

New Orleans-based clarinet crusader Evan Christopher and Paris-based composer and trumpet-man, Yohan Giaume, explore the musical universe of Louis Moreau Gottschalk.

Ragtime, Joplin and the Birth of Jazz

Celebrating 100 years of Scott Joplin and the birth of jazz, this retrospective addresses the international roots and influences from traditional folk songs to early American jazz pioneers such as Joplin, W C Handy, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith.

 

Pops & Pianos

Louis Armstrong, the revolutionary and highly influential trumpet player, is one of the most recognizable icons of jazz. Throughout his life he had profound musical connections with pianists who impacted his playing and career development. Among those are Earl Hines, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, and Lil Hardin Armstrong. Pops and Piano explores the legacy of Louis Armstrong through the lens of these relationships, featuring artists Alphonso Horne and Chris Pattishall.

The Ellington Effect: A Tribute To Billy Strayhorn

A night in centennial tribute to Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington's most longstanding and intimate collaborator. Led by Caleb Curtis, The Ellington Effect brings Strayhorn's repertoire to life in a fresh way by delivering various renditions rotating as solo, duo, trio and quintet performances of American Songbook standards such as Star Crossed Lovers, Johnny Come Lately, Take the A Train, Satin Doll and Daydream.

Fictions: Borges in Tango

Named by Wynton Marsalis as one of the top five jazz musicians under 30 to watch, pianist Chris Pattishall leads an octet in an entirely original program inpsired by the short stories of Argentinian author, Jorges Luis Borges
